We have a natural gauge for our stress built into our bodies; our breath. When we pay attention to our breath and how deep or shallow our breathing we can tell just how relaxed we really are.
Spending 10 to 20 minutes a day simply focusing on our breath is enough to introduce a little calm into our day; and don't we deserve the gift of a little calm!
Try the following exercise today and see how it affects the tension in your body:
> Find a comfortable space where you will not be disturbed,
> Sit or Lie comfortably with your hands resting by your side, or on your lap with your feet uncrossed,
> Bring your attention to your body and how it feels, beginining with your feet and moving up your body to your head,
> Now bring your focus to your breathing - start to count your breath and exhale longer than you inhale,
> Begin with breathing in to the count of 5 and breathing out to the count of 7; do this three times,
> Now extend your in-breath to the count of 7 and your out-breath to the count of 11,
> Continue this exercise for 10 to 20 minutes, and if you mind wanders bring it back to your breathing.
Notice how this exercise affects the stress and tension in your body. This is such an affective technique as breathing out awakens our parasympathetic nervous system our body's natural relaxation response. By focusing on the out breath we are using our natural tools, so no matter what is happening, you always have the ability to focus on your breathing and introduce a little calm and relaxation into your day.
Enjoy the exercise!
