Living with Parkinson's Disease
| Posted on 21 April, 2014 at 8:45 |
Reading a Facebook post recently I was reminded of my own Grandmother who lived with Parkinson's disease until her death. As a child I always thought that my Grandmother did not like me. She tended to ignore me, no matter how hard I tried to please. I had often heard my siblings discuss their memories of her; her kindness and her funny anecdotes. It was not until I began my own Holistic studies and gained a better understanding of Parkinson's that I understood my Grandmother had not been ignoring me. She had lost all ability to show expression on her face, and everyday she drew more and more withdrawn until she finally seemed to be locked in to herself. Everyday was spent in front of the TV and she never left the house.
Reading the following article of one daughter's beautiful description of her father living with the disease and his experience brought home my own memories. I feel it is so important to discuss any illness or disease with those around us, so they can understand. Not just to sympathise but more often people can read into things that are not there. We do not have to dwell on the morbid but neither do we have to pretend that everything is fine and ignore the elephant in the room. Honesty and acceptance are especially important for those going through an illness or chronic disease; and just as important for those who support them through it.
Take a few minutes to savor this fine piece of writing by the daughter of a man with Parkinson's disease. Reiki practice is used by many to help ease PD symptoms and side effects of medications. Knowing patients' stories and understanding the illness can help you better communicate how Reiki can help.
