The Best Laid Plans

"The best laid schemes of mice and men often go awry", Robert Burns
This phrase, sometimes quoted as "the best laid plans" is a truth that is found repeating itself over and over again in our lives. It's meaning is simple, we can plan ahead for any eventuality we can think of, but sometimes the unexpected will still get in the way of our plans.
The unexpected is a part of life, like it or not, it is something that we cannot escape, and something that we cannot plan for. But what we can plan for is how prepared we are for our own reaction to change. Life is change- another often quoted message - meaning that the essense of living is that everyday something changes in our life. The Earth, the planets, nature, our own bodies are always going through changes, from the moment we are born. However, we create false senses of security in our day to day routines, our schedules and our planning. We create unconcious programmes within our minds: our thoughts are linked to our emotions, our emotions are linked to our senses and our senses feed our thoughts. It is a constant cycle of repetition, this repetition is what shapes how we react to all the challenges that we face, big or small.
If it's unconsious how can we change this programming? The simple answer, is awareness. Until we become aware of what is happening in our own 'thoughts - emotions - senses - thoughts' cycle, we are unable to interrupt the cycle, to introduce a new programme, a shift in our unconcsious reactions to life.
Throughout our lives, from when we are young children, we are constantly creating and recreating these programmes. How we react to the changes life brings is based on how we have dealt with change in the past - if we fear change, then our automatic programming is to react to all change as negative. Sometimes we relish change, wanting things in our lives to go differently to how it has "always" gone before, but we feel stuck in a pattern or routine that doesn't fulfil us. Either way, in order to consciously make changes in our life, or to accept the changes that are occuring, becoming aware of the how we are programmed to react is key.
Whether working with meditation, energy healing or whatever method you choose to awaken your awareness to your inner thoughts, emotions and senses; it is vital to connect to ourselves, accept life as it is in this present moment and recognise where you are in your life, that helps when dealing with change. If you are tuned out of your life and unaccepting of the changes that are occuring then you render yourself powerless - there are always circumstances over which we are powerless, but how we react to those circumstances is completely within our power.
So take a deep breath, and on the out-breath let go of the struggle; the need to be right, the need to be in control; learn to relax into life; challenge your assumptions of what life should be and grow from them; never give up hope; you can be anything, you can learn to flow and change with life instead of fighting what life brings your way, embrace it as a reality, face it, grow from it; don't leave anything on the table, don't let life frighten you into hiding from it; and accept that life will always throw you something unexpected, so prepare not for what may or may not come your way, but welcome whatever comes with the energy of possiblity, knowing that you have come through change a million times before and you will do so again!
Warmest wishes,
Emily
