Wednesday Wisdom: How to Read Oracle Cards

Why is it that we turn to "oracles" for guidance rather than our own inner knowlege?

I have been reading oracle cards for the last 12 years, it began as a curiosity, as I had received a lovely reading from a lady I had gone to for a pedicure no less, but I found the cards so beautiful and the messages so inspiring that I thought it would be lovely to have a set for myself.  Every day I would shuffle the deck and pull a card to give me a little guidance and insight into the day ahead.  At first I would read the explanation for each card from the guidebook in the pack, but as time went on, I simply looked at the card and "knew" the informaton it was giving me.  As I spoke with friends and family about my oracle cards, they asked me to read cards for them and were always surprised at the insight I could find in the cards.  Even though I knew these people and the issues and circumstances that were relevant in their lives; there always seemed a much deeper insight when addressing the cards; beyond what we had discussed over a cuppa.

I find the imagery within the cards, the colours, the symbols speak a language that much like the fables we were told as children or the parables preached at Mass each Sunday help us to find a much deeper meaning to relate to our individual circumstances than dwelling with thought alone.  But it's not enough to simply look at the card, there is a listening process involved too.

Take the card I pulled for Wednesday Wisdom this morning; The Desert Prince - survival, false promises.  At first glance it is impossible to decipher what this card could mean (apart from the hopes that some fierce handsome hunk is coming into our lives)!

But looking further into the card the insight is in the deeper and sometimes more obvious clues:

  1. The Text of the Card:

"desert" - a time of scarcity; "prince" - royalty, entitled; "suvival" - a battle of wits, courage is required; "false promises" - being let down
  2. The imagery of the Card:

"strong weapon welding man" - Strength, courage, confidence
"lioness on his right hand side" - the huntress, the fierce mother, protection
"water to is left" - going with the flow, hydration - nourishment, washing clean impurities, left hand side receiving
"the pyramid behind" - ancient knowledge and wisdom; healing properies; links with the heavens
"the moon behind the pyramid" - balance, cycles of life,
"standing on rock" - the strength of our foundations

  3. Putting it altogether:

We can say this card speaks of a feeling of scarcity, we do not have all that we want or feel entitled to, perhaps life may be a struggle at present, that perhaps we or others have disappointed us.  However, there is always hope if we rely on our own deep inner knowledge wisdom and strength, we have the courage and confidence to brave this battle.  We have everything we need, we must only allow ourselves to receive it.  Wash off the negative thinking and step forward on solid ground - our strength in our own abilites will carry us through no matter what life has to throw at us.
Of course it could also mean a hunky fierce prince with a pet lion is on the way, but I would go with the imagery for a more useful reading :P

  4. If you have a specific question you can also use this imagery to give a much deeper answer, as the symbols may speak directly towards your question.

Above all, oracle cards don't tell us what to do, we must make those decisions for ourselves; but what they do is help us to see our current circumstances more objectively and gain some hope and conviction no matter what is happening in our daily lives.

Self Care September - Day 16

Have you asked yourself - what you want!

I was reading Angel Cards for clients this week and a recurring theme kept appearing.  When I finished reading for my clients I decided to pick a card for myself.  The card that appeared was The Angel of Inner Knowing.  For me, oracle readings, whether using cards, runes or any divination tool is making use of the language of symbols and imagery to help you to focus on the issues that are affecting you in this current moment.  Most healers and readers will agree that when a recurring theme is showing up for your clients it is mirroring issues that are just as important for the reader or healer also.

So what did the Angel of Inner Knowing have to say?  The message that accompanied the card included the following wording: "If you're feeling somewhat confused or puzzled by recent events, then stop what you're doing right now, as you've been jumping around, here, there and everywhere, and all you've really done is go round in circles.  This is because you keep listening to other people's advice, and you seem to want to ask absolutely everyone for their opinion of your circumstances, and, of course, everybody tells you something different.  The person you haven't asked is yourself."  When I read this I realised, it couldn't be more true!  Over the last number of weeks I had some long discussions with my husband, my friends and family;  I had come to a big decision in my life - something that would not just affect me but all my family.  But....... I was really struggling to implement the decision I had made.  There was no logical reason why, but I was struggling to fully commit.  When I read the wording on that accompanied the Angel card, I decided that I had indeed been acting on the advice of others; which while perfectly sound, caring and logical advice, was not what I really wanted.  Something in my gut just didn't feel right.  I realised that I had not truly spent any real time considering what I wanted; I was acting on autopilot.

The following morning when I had some time to myself, I took out my note pad and I wrote down my questions.  I asked myself, what it was that I wanted; not what was logical, what Ishould do but what I "wanted"!   I then answered my questions truthfully; wrote them down; and rewrote them again and again until I got the wording right - I knew I had the answers when my stomach didn't lurch and I felt a total peace when I read it out loud.  Finally, I wrote what I wanted as a letter addressed to the Universe.............and finished the letter with "Thank you Universe, it is happening!". This Mantra was suggested during our Healing Share this week.....to help with patience.  To be totally honest I had no idea how the Universe was going to deliver what I wanted, it wasn't the most logical decision, but I didn't feel the gut wrenching uneasiness I had felt before.  It simply fit; and what is more; I had finally discovered what I wanted; not what I "should" want, but what I really and truly "did" want.

Of course, the Universe has it's own way of doing things; by the time I went to bed that night, I had received two confirmations that this was the right choice.  One was in the form of an unexpected phone call and the second was in the form of a conversation with my husband; which left me remembering what a wonderful man he is.  This morning I felt excited about my decision and I knew the card reading had dealt me a life saver.  It stopped me from going down the difficult path of confusion, by one simple piece of advice..........to ask myself what I want and to listen carefully to the answer!

Therefore today, I suggest to you, that if you feel things are not going your way, or you seem to be going in circles - perhaps you haven't been listening to your inner knowing; perhaps you haven't been specific with yourself, or with the Universe.  Try asking yourself what it is YOU want......if you don't know, try starting with what you don't want, and this will help make your mind up.  When you've come to the answers that are right for you, you will know it, as it feels good in your gut!

Then write our your letter:

Dear Universe,

I want.................(fill in the blank).  Thank you Universe, I know this is happening right now for me!;

now let go of the outcome; let go of the how and leave it up to the universe to deliver those subtle suggestions, those inner nudges that lead the way to delivering to you what you really want!

Warmest wishes,

Emily xxx
